Julie Rozman is a ceramic artist, architect, and designer who lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. Her primary mediums are architecture and ceramics.

Warm but happy after a successful firing of my own and other students’ work.

I practice architecture with Johnson Lasky Architects, am participating in NCARB certification, professional licensure, and LEED accreditation, and hold a B. Architecture with Honors from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where I was a Driehaus Scholar. I’m also a former National Merit Finalist.

I am a member of Lill Street Art Center, where I do most of my ceramic work. I am part of the firing team on the soda side. Sometimes I TA. I’ve found clay to be a medium for design, play, exploration, self-expression. The biggest challenge of seriously pursuing art while being professionally employed is maintaining momentum.

A bit on ceramics and architecture. They each present challenges in terms of materials, technology, fabrication, design, and process. There is subtle and not-so-subtle cross-disciplinary enrichment. In architecture, I write the instruction book, in the form of drawings and specs, for a team of people to create something, and the process takes months, or more. In ceramics, it’s mine from conception to creation, the time scale is smaller, the evolution is faster. I can be involved in every step of the process, and really know, I made this.There are always new things to learn, always something to try. My work, from thought and fabrication processes to physical results, are heavily influenced by my background in architecture.
